A Quick Curated Tour of The Google Universe

We all know and use Google as the Internet Search engine but for Researchers and well … anyone, Google has amazing, powerful, and insightful tools.

  • artsandculture.google.com is where you can find Blob Opera and dozens of creative and fun apps and cultural information. Currently it’s Valentine’s Day themed. It’s well worth the time to see interesting images, discover events near you, and more.

  • flights.google.com should be your newest go-to travel tool. Here you can research flights and prices for cities around the world. Set price alerts and comparison shop all in one place.

  • finance.google.com won’t lead to a Blob Opera discovery, but you will find stock market articles and stock quotes for your own financial research.

  • maps.google.com is one of my bookmarks. In addition to planning local trips, use this feature to explore locations and settings in your fiction.

  • earth.google.com is still in test mode but provides a world view of geographic areas in time laps useful for settings and developing a sense of where you are or want to be in the world.

  • scholar.google.com uses the Google search engine for scholarly research. If you’ve been told not to use Google as your source, this is different. This flavor of Google search finds journals and research materials. It includes PDFs, links, and citations! While it won’t take the place of JStor or other library subscription-based services, if you don’t have access to an academic library, this will take you far.
