I just threw up in my mouth (50 lbs of chewed and dried gum is approximately 12,600 pieces!), but you made me laugh anyway! GREAT article!

I did fully admit to the EW factor ; )

Yes you did - I will admit, but there's something about gum, where it's been, where the mouths that chewed have been, and the indecency of those who chewed it - with gooey, grimy hands, not disposing of it properly. Oops, maybe I just grossed YOU out - but did I make YOU laugh? (you made me laugh AGAIN, thinking about you laughing!)

My paper route tips burned a hole in my pocket all the way to the candy store each week. Double Bubble (original and green apple flavor) were my favorites, but I always grabbed some bazooka pieces as backup. All these gums were sold individually from barrels in O'Neil's Country Store for 2 cents a piece. My brother was more of a Hubba Bubba, Double Bubble (no fudge) and Bubblicious man though. The more sugar the better, the more pieces he could fit in his mouth at once, the cooler. Ultimately, we both ended up with plenty of cavities. But to me, the memories were worth it. Thanks for the trip down memory lane! :)

Yes on the Green Apple. I had forgotten about that. And those hard, hard bazooka pieces but anything was better than nothing. : )

I, too, had a paper route and bought bazooka joe. A hit of sugar and a corny comic!

Sharon-- Thanks for sharing this. My kiddo just asked me to buy a pack of gum and this writing stood out to me. I'll be sure to show them your writing and see what they said about it. Though I have a feeling they'll forget all about what they've learned after a few months? Something about their brain (maybe it's all the gum-chewing?) makes them forget important information that is clearly useful for them. :)

My kiddos don't listen to me either : ). You can hear the eye rolls. Thanks for reading and for taking the time to write to me.

Thanks for this! I was wondering what gum is made out of these days.

Very interesting where the name "Chiclets" came from!
